Lesson 1 - Introduction

Student Workbook

Before we get started, I suggest creating a folder to save all of your course documents. Then, clink on the link for Pathways Student Workbook. This is a Google doc and you will need to create a copy and rename it for your own use. If you have any difficulty with this process, please text me and I will send you a copy 919-462-1497.

Please send me a share link so I can see your progress. You may also share with your parent(s) if you like.

My email is [email protected]. Please add me to your safe sender list so my emails don't end up in your spam folder.

When I Grow Up...

It's really annoying when adults ask you now, but what did you want to be when you grew up in elementary school? Write your dreams down in your workbook, the more unrealistic the better!

Pursuing your Dreams

I will never tell you not to reach for your dreams and stick to what is realistic. If you want to be a professional athlete or rock star, by all means put your heart into it and work hard to achieve it. I also want you to consider what other career paths you might want to pursue to support your dream or transition to a different path at some point (when your knee gives out or you get tired of the tour schedule!). Watch this YouTube clip of Will Smith giving his son some career advice.

What I Really Don't Want To Do...

Knowing what you DON'T want to do can be helpful in narrowing down your options. Check out this clip from 80's movie "Say Anything". Feel free to mock the hair and clothing.

Take 2 minutes to write down a list of jobs that you would detest in your workbook. Time yourself and try to write down as many as you can.

Celebrity First Jobs Quiz

Most people change careers several times over the course of their life. That's good news for you! You don't have to feel pressured to commit to one career for the rest of your life. You can start exploring careers now and learn what you do and don't like. See if you can guess how each of these celebrities started out.

Career Exploration Process

This image shows the basic steps we use in the career exploration process. Since your career may change at some point, knowing this process can be helpful when you face new opportunities and choices.

Career Clusters

There are more careers out there than you can even imagine. 50% of you will end up in a career you have never even heard of. That's great news. You don't need to decide on one career for the rest of your life. You just need to try out a direction and see where it leads. Let's start by taking a look at general career interest areas. The image below will give you an idea of the career groups you might be interested in. Take a closer look (zoom in if it's hard to read) and make note of the areas that you are most interested in. Write them down in your workbook.
